Know Your Rights: Your Rights as a Disabled Protestor

You have the constitutional right to protest. Being disabled doesn’t void those rights. Here are some tips you can use to be prepared for any confrontation with law enforcement.

Mottled orange background. Black text box with white text: You have the right to protest in public spaces. The First Amendment protects your right to peaceful assembly regardless of disability status. Law enforcement cannot single you out or remove you from a protest because of your disability.

You can clearly state this, or if speech is not an accessible form of communication for you, carry a printed card with your needs to hand to law enforcement. You can also prepare and bring a recording stating your needs that you can you play during any law enforcement encounter.
Mottled orange background. Black text box with white text: KNOW YOUR EXIT ROUTES BEFORE YOU ARRIVE. SCOUT THE LOCATION IN ADVANCE FOR ACCESSIBLE EXITS, CURB CUTS, AND AREAS AWAY FROM CROD PRESSURE POINTS. HAVE A DESIGNATED BUDDY WHO KNOWS YOUR NEEDS AND STAYS WITH YOU.

If you use a device, medication or have a condition that may require explanation to police or emergency personnel, carry a brief written card describing it. Medical equipment cannot lawfully be confiscated without due process.

You have the right to necessary medical care and accommodation in custody. say or provide text that states: “i have a disability.i need [accomodation/medication/assistance].” Do not wait – share it at the moment of arrest.
