Statement: U.S. Justice Department Orders Halt to Civil Rights Work

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division has been instructed to halt pursuing any new cases or investigations, filing motions, or seeking settlements in existing litigation. This is a blow to the crucial work of building trust and police accountability.

The DOJ investigates patterns of abuse within local police departments throughout the nation and is responsible for making sure they enact changes they promised to make — or were ordered to make. Without this oversight, we are likely to lose ground in the hard work of holding law enforcement accountable when they break the law. For communities already vulnerable to police misconduct, this deepens mistrust and exacerbates tensions.

Disability Law United is committed to ensuring that disabled and nondisabled communities have the fair, safe, accountable systems they deserve, and we will never stop fighting.
